‘Weird times call for weird measures. As soon as this virus began changing our lives forever I started to worry about how I would be able to continue as an artist. I’m not a millionaire, I have no patron and I’m signed to one of the biggest galleries in the world. Nonetheless, I have a modicum of success and decided to do a small experiment to see what might work in this new climate we’re going into.
Thus was born the EMERGENCY ARTBOOK 2020. I thought if I can get a 72-page book together in a matter of days, with artwork, puzzles, games, colouring-in pages and some important mental health and well-being information (kindly supplied by my amazing wife Michelle who just happens to be a mental health first aid trainer), then I can see if there is still a taste for tangibility, and it seems there is.
The book is a simple A5 format, 72 pages with full-colour work on every page. Each book is numbered and signed off an edition of 100 and comes accompanied by a colourful A5 giclee print, also signed and numbered. To make the books more desirable I threw in 5 original A5 paintings worth £500 each randomly packed into 5 lucky people’s envelopes.
People need art and colour now more than ever. Art is proven to help people’s mental health, it makes us happy and gives us release from the mundane. ”
