Style of the City was kindly invited to the opening night of Olivier award-winning West End and Broadway show, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, at the Wales Millennium Centre.
The musical told the inspiring story of Carole King before she became a music legend and how her life led to that point. The performance-focused on her relationship with Gerry Goffin, and how they became a hit songwriting team, as well as their best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann. With many of their iconic hit songs performed throughout!
The Wales Millennium Centre is always a lovely venue to visit and watch a production. We began the evening with a drink at the Fresh Bar and Kitchen, before heading to our seats. We had a perfect central view of the stage!
The performance was fantastic from start to finish! Daisy Wood-Davis, who is most known for her role on Hollyoaks, played Carole King exceptionally. Her vocals were breath-taking throughout the show songs, including (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman. Many of King’s top hits were included such as You’ve Got a Friend and Will You Love Me Tomorrow. It was heartbreaking to watch the collapse of her relationship with Gerry Goffin and Adam Gillian captured his struggles really well.
The whole ensemble was amazing, including the performance of another famous hit, The Loco-Motion. It was so fun! The colourful and bright lights on the stage with the setup and backdrops made each performance truly feel like we were watching artists live performances through the decades! All the dances and songs were catchy and had everyone smiling!
Although the whole cast was fabulous, I particularly loved Cynthia Weil, played by Laura Baldwin, she was hilarious, fashionable and performed so well, especially with Barry Mann, played by Cameron Sharp. It was lovely to see how their love story began!
Beautiful was such a phenomenal performance and a great watch, whether you know much about Carole King’s life or not, you’re in for a treat! The cast, costumes, and songs are a must-see, you won’t be disappointed! I loved this production and I’m eager to see it again.
Beautiful: The Carole King Musical will be in Wales Millenium Centre until March 14th, 2020.
