The Motability Scheme has helped millions of people over the last couple of decades find hassle-free motoring and the freedom of a brand new car with minimal financial outlay, yet there are still millions of eligible people who qualify for the scheme yet don’t know they do.
The scheme caters for a wide range of users such as those with physical disabilities, and also offers certain adaptations to the car at no extra cost. It is also growing ever popular and available to those with mental and cognitive conditions too providing they are receiving a qualifying benefit.
Who can qualify?
To be eligible to join the Motability Scheme, you need to receive one of the following mobility allowances and you must have at least 12 months’ award length remaining. Please note that the Attendance Allowance cannot be used to lease a car through the Scheme.
- Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HRMC DLA)
As of 10 April 2019, this allowance is £61.20 per week.
- Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP)
As of 08 April 2019, this allowance is £61.20 per week.
- War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
As of 10 April 2019, this allowance is £68.35 per week.
- Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
As of 10 April 2019, the mobility element of the allowance is £61.20 per week.
Even if you can’t drive you can name up to 2 drivers such as a carer or family member to drive for you, giving you the freedom and enjoyment of a brand new hassle free car regardless of your situation.
What does it include?
After you have paid the initial Advance Payment for the car from your benefit allowance, each car is yours for 3 years and the following is always included in the price:
- Car insurance, servicing and maintenance
- 60,000 mile allowance across the 3 year period
- Full breakdown cover
- Certain adaptations at no extra cost
- Replacement tyres
- Up to two named drivers
- Windscreen repair or replacement
At the end of the 3-year term you simply hand the car back and choose another one for the next 3 years.
