  • Amalfi Coast, Italy

Best time to go: April to June, with temperatures in the 20s and before it gets too busy.

This region of Italy boasts stunning scenery and enchanting views of the ocean. A vertical landscape characterized by a picturesque labyrinth of stairways and narrow alleys covering the mountainside the Amalfi Coast is a truly beautiful Mediterranean sight. There are 13 stunning towns along the Amalfi Coast, connected by what has been called one of the most beautiful roads in Italy, meaning there’s plenty to explore whilst you’re there.   • Maldives, Indian Ocean

Best time to go: December to April. Although hot and sunny all year round, it’s best to go during the dry season.

Romanesque and Gothic architecture and less busy than the tourist-filled Lisbon. There’s an observation deck that you can reach via a spiral staircase to overlook the whole city and its multicoloured buildings. Best time to go: All year round

  • Plovdiv, Bulgaria

Best time to go: April to May, or September if you fancy a warm holiday of exploring (which isn’t sweltering like the high summer). From October, it’s often blanketed in snow, so if you’re after a chillier visit, this is the best time to go.

Named the 2019 European capital of culture, Plovdiv is the first Bulgarian city to be awarded the title. This could the next big European city break destination; it has a cute cobbled old town, with impressive Roman ruins and some isn’t going to break your wallet. Best time to go: July to August

For the ultimate beach holiday where you can avoid a lot of the dreaded tourists and holiday-makers, Dominican Republic is a great place to visit. Ideal for watersports and waterlovers, as well as sun worshipers who are just looking to relax on the beach with a good book and cocktail, this is the place for you.   • Seattle, Washington, USA

Best time to go: June to September

Lonely Planet has pegged Seattle in the top 10 cities to visit in 2019. As a large city, there’s much to see and do in this part of the world. With some fine wineries, a stunning skyline which you can view from the iconic Seattle Space Needle and snowsport culture – being so close to the Stevens Pass mountains – there really is something for everyone to enjoy in this region of the world!

 

  • Elqui Valley, Chile

Best time to go: March to May

The whole region experiences 360 clear nights each year (on average) making it an incredible place to stargaze and study the solar system. There are many observatories and tours can be organized to make the most of the area. Why not camp out under the stars for a truly romantic and unforgettable break from real life? This area is also well-known for its vineyards and local brandy, pisco, which is a must whilst visiting. Horse-riding through the valleys is also popular; allowing you to explore the area and enjoy being completely submerged in the culture, thousands of miles away from reality.
