Fat grafting at Only You Clinic
Fat transfer or fat grafting is a procedure in which fat cells are taken from one area (usually the stomach, hips, or thighs) and transferred to the face, in order to rejuvenate the area and fill in hollows. The fat cells are specially prepared before they are injected, in order to give them the best chance for survival. The cells will establish themselves in the new site, and continue to live long-term, offering ongoing facial rejuvenation. Patients love this procedure, because it uses their own cells for rejuvenation, and does not need to be repeated over time in order to maintain the results.
Depending on which area of the face is to be treated, the amount of the transferred fat that survives varies. This is because the transferred fat cells rely on microscopic blood vessels to grow into them the keep them alive and these vessels can be sheared off when there is movement between the transferred fat cells and the surrounding tissue. In essence fat grafting to the lower half of the face (which is very mobile) tends to work less well than fat grafting to the upper half of the face which is relatively static
Whilst the volume increase may be permeant, the skin of the face will continue to deteriorate with age – it may be worth considering additional treatments to compliment the fat grafting to maintain a youthful and rejuvenated appearance such as chemical peels, micro-needling or laser skin treatments.
Fat grafting to cheek, lower lids, and temples. As can be seen in this example of a 70-year-old lady who underwent a single episode of fat grafting to the cheeks, lower lids and temple areas, fat grafting (demonstrated in the right-hand photographs) effectively counteracts the loss of volume seen in the images in the left side. There is an improvement in facial shape and a more youthful appearance.
