Head over to the Wales Millennium Centre to see Dolly Parton’s smash-hit musical, starring Wales’ very own Caroline Sheen and Amber Davies. Based on the 20th Century Fox Picture, and originally produced on Broadway by Robert Greenblatt, 9 to 5 The Musical will have you laughing from the very first scene.
The sold-out production from London’s West End, 9 to 5 The Musical tells the story of three women being pushed to their boiling points by their sexist and egotistical boss. Its storyline features sexual harassment and bullying in the office place and highlights the debate on unequal pay and opportunities for female workers. Unfortunately, illustrating its relevant today, in the wake of the #MeToo movement.
The three women execute a plan to kidnap and turn the tables on their sexist supervisor. To the audience’s delight, it leads to him being hung in bondage gear from a ceiling at his own home. Finally, with Mr. Hart away from the office, the women manage to reform their working environment for the better.
Caroline Sheen acts as Violet Newstead, a widowed woman who is the senior office administrator and is overlooked for a promotion in favour of a man she originally trained. Georgia Castle, plays Doralee Rhodes, the bleach blonde secretary who is mistaken for the boss’ mistress. The trio is complete with Amber Davies, originally known from winning Love Island in 2017, who plays Judy Bernly, who is forced to take a job due to her husband leaving her for his younger secretary. Davies surpasses all expectations and wows the audience with her talent and vocal range.
Surprisingly, Dolly Parton herself introduces the show and joins in the title opening song “9 to 5” by video, and the presence and spirit of Dolly Parton hovers over the entire show.
9 to 5 The Musical is at Wales Millennium Centre until Saturday, November 2nd, 2019.
